I purchased my first
Minor just after my 16th birthday. It was equipped with a tuned 1275cc Midget
engine. I spent the next year preparing
it for my 17th birthday. Soon I was putting in a 2000cc Fiat engine ( my first
) and competing in road rallies. This was the car that started me
on the road of modified vehicles.

I intended to fit disc
brakes, telescopic dampers and detune
the engine by removing the single 45DCOE Weber carb and
fit a single 1 1/2" SU. Bumpers would also be fitted.

I paid £750 for
the car without seeing it run.

I had a fascination with
burnouts so would often bolt on some
old tyres and spin them up.

|
|
For some reason I broke
3 gearboxes and a differential in the
first 9 months of driving the car. I used to get back from
school, have the box out before tea and then have the car
back on the road for 8pm.

I only did a few runs
down the strip with the 1275 engine and
this is the quickest. I could have run 17`s easily.

|
|
The Midget engine required
a rebuild as it was using a lot of
oil so I decided to put a 2000cc Fiat twin cam engine. I had
seen 2 Minors so equipped at the national Minor rally and
read about another 2 in Street Machine. This gave me
inspiration and the owner of one of the cars Russ Smith gave
me advice.
